What is and Orthotist/Prosthetist?

An ABC certified orthotist and/or prosthetist is a healthcare professional who is specifically educated and trained to manage comprehensive orthotic and/or prosthetic patient care. This includes patient assessment, formulation of a treatment plan, implementation of the treatment plan, follow-up and practice management. ABC’s Certified Orthotist, Certified Prosthetist and Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist credentialing programs are accredited by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) formerly National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA.)

As the individual responsible for all patient care, the certified practitioner independently provides or supervises the provision of comprehensive orthotic and/or prosthetic care. This includes patient assessment, formulation of a treatment plan, implementation of a treatment plan, follow-up and practice management. Additionally, the certified prosthetist and/or orthotist is obligated to support and conform to the Code of Professional Responsibility which promotes and assures the overall welfare of the patient and the integrity of the profession.

Why is education/Certification level of my provider important?

Orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic education provides the necessary foundation allowing individuals to provide the highest quality of clinical patient care.

Certified Orthotists and Prosthetists
ABC Certified Orthotists (CO) and Certified Prosthetists (CP) have a strong science background that incorporates courses in biology, physics and chemistry as well as formal instruction in biomechanics, kinesiology, pathomechanics, material science and gait analysis. To be certified by ABC, a practitioner must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in orthotics and prosthetics or a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in another field and a post-graduate certificate program in orthotics and prosthetics, and successfully completed a 12-month National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) accredited residency program.

The education requirements for ABC Certified Orthotists and Certified Prosthetists are the only orthotic and prosthetic educational standards recognized by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). ABC’s education standards are the highest standards in the orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic profession.
